The most recent information released by the Department of Child Safety does show a decrease of children currently in state custody. The report released in June 2016 showed 18,906 kids in care and, as of August 31, 2016, DCS is reporting the number is just over 18,000. This is the first number released that has shown a decrease in 7 years.
