Question: What do you wish people knew about foster care?

There is so much I have learned in the 4 years I have been involved in the world of foster care. I think if I had to narrow it down to one thing it would be…I wish people knew how much kids in foster care truly are just kids. Over and over again we hear from those that interact with kids at events and even those who interact with my adopted children about how surprised they are by their normalcy.

I am not discounting their trauma. I am looking past their trauma and seeing them for who they are at the core. When I take the time to stop and talk with them, typically I quickly find common ground and things to talk about. Whatever your kids are talking about is probably a great place to start. If we could replace fear with this simple truth that they are just kids I believe it would create a huge positive ripple effect for kids in foster care.
