Parenting Tricks and Treats #1

Trick #1

Holidays can be stressful and particularly for children who have been through trauma, it is typical for children to regress and return to old negative behaviors. So the “trick” is to give them permission to bring back an old behavior. This will help the child to be aware of the problem and allow the cortex of the brain to be activated. If the child doesn’t bring back the behaviors, Yeah!!! For the whole family and if they do exhibit the behavior give them a hug and remind them that you were alright with the behavior and you gave them permission. This helps the child learn to follow your lead as a parent.  Now if the behavior is particularly annoying to the siblings, just “treat” them every time the child exhibits the behavior. This helps preserve siblings relationships until the behavior can be extinguished again.
