Question: Can you be a foster parent if you are bipolar (is controlled and on medication and therapy)?

There is nothing in the regulations that states you cannot foster if you have a controlled medical condition. It is important that you add this question to the list of questions asked when interviewing/picking your agency.

Picking an agency is very important. A good agency is a support to foster parents. They help advocate, encourage, and resource the families they license. Each agency is a little different and can have their own guidelines that are in addition to the state regulations. Even if there are no state regulations on a specific medical condition, there may be agency specific regulations. For example, working parents are allowed to foster but, some agencies will not allow kids under a certain age to be in childcare.  Or, some agencies will not license a family that owns a bully breed dog.  After attending orientation, potential families take this next step and choose an agency. We are always available to families who have questions along the way.
